Portal fans, rejoice! A small team of developers calling themselves Software Face Software have released a new mod for Portal 2 that adds over eight hours of original content to the base game. Portal: Revolution is a free-to-play mod that takes place chronologically before the events of Portal 2, in what the team describes as a dead and decaying Aperture facility. The description of the mod says that it will contain more than 40 original puzzles that use new elements and use existing mechanisms in ways not seen in Portal 2. Highlights include a new version of the laser cube, a gel cleaning area, and the return of the “pneumatic manifold.
vent” element and 15+ puzzles Fax Lists that only use the blue Portal-Gun. As for difficulty, the team said the mod "picks up where Portal 2 left off," but assures players that they'll be learning about new mechanics and tricks before being thrown into the fire. Everything has been carefully tested so that the puzzles are not too hard; none require complex advanced movement, and only a few call for portals to fire in the air. Depending on your skill with Portal 2's mechanics, the mod can be good for anywhere from five to eight hours of gameplay. Portal: The revolution was originally expected to go down on January 5, but the team hit a minor speed bump along the way. The game was submitted to Valve for review on December 20th (all games on Steam must be reviewed before release).
The developers were told that a small group of reviewers would be available over the holidays and to expect some delays. Fortunately, the holidays only kept things for one day and the mod has since been given the green light. Portal 2 is the 2011 successor to Valve's first series from 2007, itself a spiritual successor to a game called Narbacular Drop, which was a senior project by a group of students at the DigiPen Institute of Technology. If you don't already have it, Portal 2 is available now on Steam for $9.99.
