Glenn and I had the opportunity to present at the Oregon Elementary Career Day last Friday. We had a blast, and teaching the kids about how music can be a career was an awesome experience for us!
We started presenting at 8:30 and went until 11:30. We saw 5 different classes. 2 Kindergarten, 2 2nd Grade and 1 5th grade. The kids just seemed to be eating it up and had a great time! They were so focused on making their own music when it came time for them to play.
We started out with each class by showing them the wide range of sounds you can make on guitar, then talked about how they could make a career out of music if they wanted to. Then we played about half of Sweet Home Alabama for them and then gave them the chance to plug in and play. We made sure that each student had a chance to play the guitar of their choice through an amp. Glenn brought his Bass guitar in addition to his six string and a Fender combo amp and a practice bass amp. I brought all 8 of the guitars I had access to (one was my wifes and 3 others my girls) including my acoustic and My Marshall Half Stack amp.... and my youngest daughter Rogue brought her B.C. Rich Warlock and her Marshall combo amp. Without Rogue's help we wouldn't have been able to let every kid play in the time we had alloted for each class. Thanks Rogue, you freakin rock woman!
It was really cool to see the kids getting so into playing, especially the younger kids. What a trip to see such focus and detirmination to make some music. You could almost see the rock star just waiting to come out of some of these kids. We were left wondering how many will be in the future. It really was an awesome experience and the kids were great! Very well behaved.
I was telling a MySpace friend that I think some of the teachers were really suprised at how well ALL the kids behaved.... even kids who usually have a hard time staying focused. They were patient and focused like a freakin laser beam on playing and helping each other out. The 5th graders were even helping each other remember how to play "Smoke On The Water" which they learned in the 4th grade on the ukulele!
Very very cool day for us and we hope we get the chance to do it again next year! Thanks again for the help Rogue!
